Garden and State Fair from From My Carolina Home

Rain fell off and on last week, and one drizzly morning these boys came by for a visit. Both males, they strutted around and loudly gobble-gobbled. I threw some sunflower seed hearts out for them.

They were happy as clams to do a bit of hunt and peck.

The goldfinches and a woodpecker got their share in the feeder. There is a titmouse on the back side as well.

The garden is winding down, but the squashes refuse to fully ripen. I’ve moved the leaves around to get more sunlight to them, and I am still waiting. The largest ...

May In the Garden from From My Carolina Home

This weekend, I finally am getting to my garden planting. Usually I’ve put seeds in peat pots weeks before now, and planted my pots with annuals in early May. Not this year, so I had some catching up to do. My plants that survived the winter in the sunroom were moved to the veranda, but the other pots were still empty, and I didn’t have anything for my hanging baskets. I had swept the flooring of pollen, but it still needed a good wash before filling up the pots. So, after we played pickleball on Saturday morning, we ...

April in the Garden from From My Carolina Home

The garden is coming alive, and more things are blooming now, too. It is lovely to have warmer days while still having cool nights. It makes me want to go dig in the dirt just a bit. It was a busy time for the garden this week, so settle in for a long and picture heavy post. Last week, a warm day with a cool breeze was perfect for getting some of that clean up done that I talked about last week. As I hauled some tools out to the front, the beauty of the azaleas made me pause, and ...

September in the Garden from From My Carolina Home

Tomatoes! The garden continues to be the most prolific I’ve ever had. I am amazed at how well the new location is for them, lots of sun means lots of tomatoes.

Clusters of cherry size tomatoes are all over these vines.

The Cherokee Purple vine has three fat ones in the process of getting ripe. I threaded the vine onto the veranda railing to keep it from cascading down the backside of the planter where I can’t reach.

Heirloom variety tomatoes are growing too, these make larger ones with lots of flavor.

Last weekend I talked about how ...

Sunday Chat from From My Carolina Home

Coming home from our adventures in Virginia, the tomato plants were prolific in our absence. The day we left, I gave all I had at that time to my neighbor for her help watering my plants while we were gone. This basket was collected the day we got back, and a few went on salads for dinner the next evening. There are dozens more on the plants yet to come.

So I told you something fun happened while we were at the quaint little roadside motel in Luray. Looking down at the lovely row of flowers, I noticed something on ...

August in the Garden from From My Carolina Home

Hot days gave way this week to milder temps, which certainly felt better to me. I usually just suffer through August, watching old classic football games to distract me from the heat and looking forward to September. I’m excited about the fair, and a few other things planned for that month. On the veranda, I got three toad lilies from Bullington Gardens, and eagerly await some blooms in September too.

In the garden planter, a pie pumpkin is growing behind some large leaves, suspended off the ground. It is getting close to being ripe enough to pick.

Nearby, another ...

May in the Garden from From My Carolina Home

There is a lot going on in the the garden this week, so get ready for a picture heavy post. The flowering season continues and some planting got done, too. I finally got back to finishing off the planting for the veranda pots this week. The impatiens were on sale at the hardware store, and I have been waiting for those to fill the pots in the little side tables. The tops are tile mosaics, so they need pots in the bottom to keep them from toppling over.

At the bargain rack last month I found this ‘drop in’ plant ...
